Nursery rhyme comic

A year ago, yes a year ago, I started drawing a mini comic for a project some friends and I were gonna put together. My idea was based around some nursery rhyme characters and I've always wanted to finish it but you know how things go... So I'm trying to pick it back up with this week's topic. These are the first 6 panels on the last page I just drew between yesterday and today. Whenever there's that much time between parts of a project the biggest hurdle for me is consistency. The Humpty Dumpty character is on a bus and this sequence is various characters getting on and off in "nursery-ryhme land". It was more like a character design task rather than any kind of story telling.

There's so many tangents here between the characters and the panels and everything. I'll adjust it all when I get more panels done.

Dave's Storybook

A pretty fun topic. Looked like some folks were doing rhymes so I tried a few too. I always seem to want to draw characters eating. I don't expect that to end any time soon. Click on the images to make 'em bigger so you can read the words.

Little Red Zombie Hood

I thought I would take an undead approach to these stories for Halloween.

The Little Mermaid

One of my favorite books growing up was The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen). In the original version, the little mermaid wants to live forever and have a soul- but mermaids can only obtain a soul by marrying a human. In this version, the prince ends up marrying another woman and the mermaid is doomed to turn into foam and die after the marriage because of the spell. But, her sisters make a deal with the sea witch: the mermaid must kill the prince with the witch's knife before sunrise to save her life. Instead of murdering him, she throws herself into the ocean and turns into foam. Then, she finds herself joining other spirits in the sky and discovers she can win a soul.

I loved that book in gradeschool- probably more so for the illustrations than the story. So, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to draw this. Catherine really helped me out at the end, adjusting the color and light.

Mr. Nigel

Another nursery rhyme of mine.

Mr. Nigel was a digger of graves both dark and deep.
Stored he there his cheese and tarts,
his goodies for to keep.

'Neath his wife he hid a pie for nigh-on thirty year.
When came he then to fetch it thence
'twas neither far nor near.

For blushing bride,
though she had died,
had et it for her own.
And having said, she ate his head,
his goodies, skin, and bone.

i have just joined this artclub recently through my friend.
This was my intial logo design, which i colored it recently.

when worlds collide

late i know, was supposed to be done awhile ago but never had the concept down the way i wanted.

there were variations on this theme but i think i finally hit upon what i was trying to say.

two worlds, two views, clashing in one moment of truth. two different realities that cant exist in the same space.

Sandwich Tree

A limerick of my own devising, circa 2005.

I'll plant for me a sandwich tree, 'twixt yonder hill and lake.
Bright shovel be, an hour or three, no longer should it take.
On mornings hence I'll paint the fence, and chores both long an labor'd.
I'll rest me thus and take my sup on breadly, meatful flavors.

Fairy Tales and Nursery Themes
Outsider Art Club, session 113

This one's a bit late on my part, but here's Shannah's theme:

Fairy tales and Nursery rhymes:

I was looking through my books to find an idea for a theme and I came across my grim's fairytales book and a nursery rhyme book. I read a couple of them and thought it would be cool to draw some scenes or twist up the characters. Make Hansel and Gretel fat greedy leiterhousened brats that go around eating peoples houses. Or even take a Nursery rhyme and draw that in all its oddness. (Rock-a-bye-baby, in a TREE TOP!) Babies don’t go in trees.

Don Dixon, you're next!

the portable polyphoniczoetropeophone

I was thinking of this as some sorta portable audio video device. Maybe like an antique DVD player. A grammophone mixed with a zoetrope can provide entertainment for entire minutes. I added straps to the horn to make it "portable."

I wanted to make it look like those old drawings of inventions back in the day. I was actually gonna do it up in orthoscopic blueprint-like views but I remembered I hate drawing parallel lines...

The Apple advertising has left such a strong impression on me - it was impossible for me not to choose their product to parody. Really - I tried to think of something else - but I couldn't get this image out of my head. I figured an iPod ad in 1900 would still be fairly plain, but the iPod itself would be a little more elaborate. Perhaps it would be a single song on a record that you could carry around with you. On the absurd end, you would tend to a mini furnace with tiny coals and shovels to keep it operational.

Week 12

Bully for Vintage Advertising!
Outsider Art Club, session 112

Nice job this week with Kurt's theme, everybody. Here's Mandy's theme:

Bully for Vintage Advertising!

It’s the 1900’s. The Art Nouveau style was at its peak, the industrial age was in full swing with a culture of consumerism, and advertisements were popping up everywhere.

But how would our modern-day electronics and fads be represented back then? How would an i-pod or “MacIntosh’s Isotope Podding Device “ be advertised in the 1900’s? Feel free to design these things true to the era, y’know made of wood or having turning cranks, iron knobs, moustaches….

Ladies and Gentlemen, retrieve your graphites and get to drafting!

MetalJaw TrapGear

Trapjaw has always been a favorite character of mine from He-Man and I chose to mix him with the character designer behind Metal Gear Solid: Yoji Shinkawa. I really admire his style and you really get to see his evolution from game to game. I know it's kinda obscure, but it was fun to attempt - somethin' I wanted to try in Painter. I missed a lot of the subtleties though.

The image above is a sample from Yoji Shinkawa. Not the best image, but he's got some great stuff.

Invader Muppet Zim Babies

I chose to do Muppet Babies in the style of Invader Zim. I always really liked Zim's style. I'm really pleased on how Ms. Piggy came out but I dont really like Kermits head. It's like a big ballon. I want to do some more of the muppet babies like this. I'd like to draw ralph, fozzi and Gonzo if i get time.

I really liked this challenge!

Week 11

Worlds Collide!
Outsider Art Club, session 111

Kurt brings the theme this week and it's a doozy! I have a feeling this will be as popular as the I Love The 80's a few weeks back:

Worlds Collide!
What would Charlie Brown look like in the world of He-Man? How about Cobra Commander in the Ren & Stimpy universe? Take one of your favorite animated characters (or comic book, manga, etc.) and draw them in the style of another cartoon. Try for real contrast here - obviously, Samurai Jack drawn in the style of Dexter's Lab would not be particularly interesting.

Magical Mandy Napper, you're next.

Head popping fun!

Back again. Just figured I'd add to my original post. I messed with the colors a bit more in this update. I think it's stronger now but for cop-out reasons: I didn't have a good idea of colors in my brain. Usually I have a direction I want to go or something I want to experiment with but this week I was lucky enough just to get a sketch. So the more I worked in Flash the more the colors just boiled down to oranges and purples. The contrast - I just wish I had a better mental image from the start. I also debated about the blood. I was going to tone it down - maybe erase it from the goons face. Too much? In the end I left it all - the sprays and splatters were just part of the fun so even if it weakens the image (or turns people off) it sorta represents my original drawing.

So what have we learned? Violence = fun.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't done anything violent in some time. I dunno where the imagery came from - guess I just tried to think of some sorta fatso bully in a seedy underground cage match. The blood and various other details were part of the fun for me - I might have rushed 'em and some of the color at the top feels muddy to me. I might tweak a bit more but it's already Saturday. The Outsider Art Club will hopefully strengthen my time management skillz...

Haven't even been on the blog since last week. I'll be back to check it all out!

Tap Dancing Animals Stalking their Prey

Started this one late - but here it is. Brad drew up this idea on a Napkin 2 weeks ago, and his doodle contained a lion in tap shoes walking up to some kind of 4 legged animal. The idea itself was very cute, and the thought of seeing these animals putting on a performance stuck in my brain. I just tried to add a little joke in there.
