Tap Dancing Animals Stalking their Prey

Started this one late - but here it is. Brad drew up this idea on a Napkin 2 weeks ago, and his doodle contained a lion in tap shoes walking up to some kind of 4 legged animal. The idea itself was very cute, and the thought of seeing these animals putting on a performance stuck in my brain. I just tried to add a little joke in there.

I tried doing a kid drawing today and here is the result. I keep thinking about Lions and Zebras. For some reason, the lion turned out looking like he was wearing a beret, and I thought after the fact that a kid probably wouldnt draw a lion on 2 legs. They are smarter than that. If I can get to it, I have another idea I'd like to try for this theme.

It is what it is....

Double team

I give you...a werewolf attacking campers by Brad Rose. Brilliant. Really puttin' that green pencil to use.

And a couple from Ben Gomez. Looks like there was some collaboration with the werewolves. Solid gold.

This actually took some time...

I took this opportunity to have fun and try to recapture what it was like to draw pictures as a kid. Step one was to look at Brad's past drawings and I try to emulate his style. I really tried to think about what he was thinking when he draws - that's really the only way. I still went through several rough concepts just like any other drawing. I tried holding the pencil up high by the eraser in an effort to lose some control. I tried drawing with a clenched fist. I tried drawing with my left hand. In the end you gotta put your whole understanding of drawing aside. It's a pretty fun mindset...I just wouldn't want to live there ;)

So this is a jungle. The snake has eaten a tap dancing mouse. See if you can spot all the animals:

- snake with a mouse in his belly
- bluejay
- cardinal
- 2 bears
- possum

And this is a monkey chasing a tap dancing banana. In the sketch I had a tiger too but tigers and monkeys hate each other so I left him out in the color version. And painting it up was very free. Still a lot of decisions to make.

Tappa-tappa-tappa

Sure it's rare that a vampire bat would prey on a human unless provoked...
But this just makes me giggle!

Week 09

Tap Dancing Animals Stalking Their Prey
Outsider Art Club, session 108

This week is a special one, brought to you by the creative genius of Brad Rose. His theme is a doozy. It's only description is it's title, but that should be enough:

Tap Dancing Animals Stalking Their Prey

Maniacal Michael Stadler is next week's them-bringer, and if it's what I think it is, we're in for an interesting week.

Get to drawing!
