Alright, I know this doesn't exactly fit the bill since Pete Yorn isn't an important historical figure, but I was listening to the Live From New Jersey CD and he just happened to say he used to work at a bar in NJ and people kept getting pissed that he wouldn't make them drinks since he wasn't the bartender. He's famous...this is before he was famous...I figured it was as close as I'd get right now, I'll think on another figure in the meantime.

Here is my piece for week 5.

Who would have thought a farm boy from a small town in Austria would grow up to be 4 time Mr. Universe, 7 time Mr. Olympia and the 38th Govenor of California... oh yeah and that little movie career he had too.

Fear of washing or bathing.

Gotta co-worker who said she can't get her kid to shampoo his head. I'd be like, "No kid 'ah mine is gonna be the stinky-kid!!!" Splish splash y'all.
Sorry, everybody. This one was too obvious. I am ashamed.

Claustrophobia
I apologize for the lateness…

On an airplane and getting the middle seat with two burly guys on either side, it's happened to everyone...

Week 05

Scotty Hammond gives us this week's theme, and here is his short and sweet description:

Very unique theme this week Scott. Who's everybody gonna pull from the pages of history?

Mixmaster Bizob is up next week : we expect great things from you Bob! Don't disappoint.

Oh yeah - Phil G was kind enough to gimme the low down on Painter one morning while the dew was still fresh. My own personal fear of Painter and it's foreign interface was conquered once I kicked out this refrigerator masterpiece. Thanks again Phil.

These top 2 that and the middle sketch are new, but the bottom 2 are from a while ago. Figured I'd post 'em for those who hadn't seen where the phobia craze started (and also to make it look like I did twice as much...) So the idea was to stick with the same character and style. It was a little weird reverse engineering the flash file and trying to carry over similar characteristics - kinda restricting actually. And I hafta credit Jeff Williams for the original color treatment back in '05 and for maniacally forcing me to pick "coal dust" this time around...

Xanthophobia - Fear of the color Yellow

Fearing the color yellow also means you'd be frightened of things like baby peeps.

Labels:

Equinophobia - Fear of Horses
Although I'm not particularly fond of horses, I chose this phobia mainly because I like doing funny horse drawings.

Labels:

Ballistophobia - Fear of missiles or bullets.

A bad, bad day for the ballistophobic.

Lutraphobia: Fear of Otters
I thought I'd try a different style than usual, I like how the otter came out. I dont much care for the background though.
But seriously how can you be afraid of otters look how cute they are!

PICKLE PHOBIA
Check out this video. This lady seems to be deathly afraid of these things. Could she handle a group of pickled costumed street thugs? I think not.

Here is my very late submission to "Kids At Play"......um, I've got no excuses to give. Just a drawing that I changed the comp to in photoshop.

I always like the thought of kids playing around that they're in a rock band of some sort. I think it's the kyutest idea in the world. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this ....sketch?

I'LL BE OUT OF TOWN from Thursday to Sunday, and I'm busy until then, so I won't get a chance to do this any other time than now. I apologize for the early post.

I chose "Technophobia," which, as you can probably figure out, is the fear of technology. I think I might just have the opposite of this disorder. I loves mah tech.

So I went with the iPod style ad for this piece. Yeah, it's unoriginal, but I thought it was funny. And it was the most creative thing I could come up with, considering the abbreviated schedule. This time, what with it being a rip-off and all, I decided to stick with the originals' style and keep my character a little more realistic and properly proportioned than I usually do. Kinda ended up looking a little like me, now that I see it done. Also, this was a good excuse to give a character a faux-hawk. These Apple people are so hep, kids. Take note.

Anyways, I'm happy with the outcome. Hope you guys like it, too. Enjoy!

Better late than Neutered.Sorry for this super late entry but it's really hard to draw when you are being hit repeatedly with a frying pan. (Just kiddin honey. Easy joke.) Anyway,...this is my preliminary drawing for the ,..." When i grow up " theme. ( And you thought it was 'kids at play.") Being the wisenheimer i was as a child, i would often tell those who asked that i was going to be a " Playboy photographer " when i grew up.(And yes i also fantasized i would be thinner as well.)

Week 4

Phobia
Outsider Art Club, session 104

This week saw the biggest growth in club members, and some terrific submissions as well. It seems like we're raising the bar a bit, as more and more members are posting finished and colored pieces. Things are getting even more awesome around here!

You might have noticed that this week's theme is being announced on Saturday rather than Friday: no I didn't forget to post it! :) This week's theme submitter, Marshall Bock, requested along with several others, that we postpone the announcement by a day. So we're trying it out. Anytime someone in the club has a suggestion, definitely e-mail me at jointheclub@oddernod.com, and we'll see if we can put it into action.

So, without further hesitation, here's this week's theme, presented by Marshall Bock:

Phobia

I got the idea while flipping through Bob’s sketchbook and I came upon his Peanut Butter Phobia (“Get it off! Get it off! Get it off!”) piece. Here’s a link to a comprehensive list of phobias to include with the post for anyone who can’t think of one or doesn’t want to do an obvious one like spiders or heights:

Phobia List

There’s some pretty crazy things to be afraid of in there.

Next week's theme will be brought to you by the scintillating Scott Hammond.

You still here? What are you waiting for? Get to drawing!

Hey:

This is a work in progress. I'm not sure if the boy in the foreground will be imagining the fireflies are planets/stars etc. or little ufo's. I'm leaning towards UFO.

This is my first post as a contributor to this blog. My name is Kevin Coffee, and I work full-time at my "real" job as graphic artist for my local CBS-Affiliate TV station, WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana USA. I enjoy my career and every day is a new challenge in the world of TV news and promotion. On the side, I devote whatever time I can to my passion of cartooning. I'm kind of in a weird phase now where I'm rather bored with doing mundane freelance work for customers who don't want to pay anyway, and I've just been enjoying getting away from trying to write gag cartoons where I'm focused on worrying about what everyone else will think is funny, and instead going off in more of a free direction based on my own imagination. If I'm not going to make money anyway, why not focus on getting the most out of exercising my own imagination and doing work that may not be marketable in magazines and newspapers, but presents the kind of dizzy, surreal oddness that I enjoy creating and would like to see more of.

I see there's a theme going on here, "children at play". I've been participating as well in the "Illustration Friday" project, and their last theme was simply "play", but since my cartoon included children, I guess it works here as well. Hope you enjoy my little visits to whatever universe my drawings exist in, and I hope to continue having fun being a part of this blog and enjoying the great work posted here by everyone.

This little spaz has enough fun just rollin' along in a cardboard box. Something that entertained me for hours I confess. I'd usually imagine it was a tank and I'd bring along a stuffed animal or two and let them tumble about until they abandoned ship. Turning a cardboard box around is near impossible so I never went back for them...

"Magic Stick"

A stick can be anything to a child, and this child is ready to lead his knights to victory.

I drew the above at the tail end of lunch yesterday.

Intro to Me: I'm a programmer by trade, but I enjoyed drawing when I was younger. I was self-taught, never followed the "draw circles and boxes" rules in those learn-how-to-draw books, and created stories and the illustrations to go with them. I used to draw the people in my grade school, and it was amazing how well they turned out. The drawings, not the people. I don't know how the people turned out.

I took drawing and painting in high school. I never could get the hang of charcoal. I still have some of my drawings somewhere in my parents' basement.

Fast forward, I graduated with a BS in computer science, taking a few 3D programming courses. So if you need someone to use bezier curves or quaternions to animate your works of art, I can do that, but I'm still learning how to use the Gimp and Blender myself to create things. I was able to follow a Photoshop tutorial in the Gimp to create a cool space scene, though. Yes, there were lens flares, but I'm not ashamed. I didn't know better.

I'm out of practice, and it shows. I joined the club because I want to get back into drawing again. You don't know how many times I wanted to hit CTRL-Z with my pencil.

"KIDS AT PLAY"
This week I pictured the image of something real, followed up by the image of the creative world going on in the mind of the child. My idea went through some painful phases - and here is the result. I wanted each image to be equally as fun, because playing with the stuff that isn't what you see in your head can be just as compelling as the imaginary creation.

I'M NOT THAT GREAT AT drawing real young kids, and somehow they always end up looking older.

Anyways, I'm not really sure what's going on here. There's a Cardboard Box Race going on, but how these kids are moving them around is beyond me; the wheels are Sharpied on. Regardless, this kid's about to bite it, and the guy in the background just did. Not much in the way of ideas this week. Here's to next week. Until then, enjoy!

Here are my submissions for "Kids at Play."

I used to have this amazing bunk-bed as a kid and it became one of my all-time favorite play things. I decided to show some of the things I remember doing on it. I'm off model in every instance!

When I was home two weeks ago, my five year-old cousin did this (quote and all) in my Grandma's dining room and I couldn't stop laughing. I had to sketch it up and submit it.

Ok so this is a work in progress but I jammed my hand playing basketball, so drawing kills right now. So heres what I got so far, 2 kids jumping on a trampoline (spelling error there I think) anyway here it is.

I've got no interesting backstory on this one; it's just the first idea that popped into my head when reading the topic. I'd love to paint this up at some point, but it's going to have to go into the backlog behind the pirate.
