Here is my very late submission to "Kids At Play"......um, I've got no excuses to give. Just a drawing that I changed the comp to in photoshop.

I always like the thought of kids playing around that they're in a rock band of some sort. I think it's the kyutest idea in the world. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this ....sketch?

Hey:

This is a work in progress. I'm not sure if the boy in the foreground will be imagining the fireflies are planets/stars etc. or little ufo's. I'm leaning towards UFO.

This is my first post as a contributor to this blog. My name is Kevin Coffee, and I work full-time at my "real" job as graphic artist for my local CBS-Affiliate TV station, WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana USA. I enjoy my career and every day is a new challenge in the world of TV news and promotion. On the side, I devote whatever time I can to my passion of cartooning. I'm kind of in a weird phase now where I'm rather bored with doing mundane freelance work for customers who don't want to pay anyway, and I've just been enjoying getting away from trying to write gag cartoons where I'm focused on worrying about what everyone else will think is funny, and instead going off in more of a free direction based on my own imagination. If I'm not going to make money anyway, why not focus on getting the most out of exercising my own imagination and doing work that may not be marketable in magazines and newspapers, but presents the kind of dizzy, surreal oddness that I enjoy creating and would like to see more of.

I see there's a theme going on here, "children at play". I've been participating as well in the "Illustration Friday" project, and their last theme was simply "play", but since my cartoon included children, I guess it works here as well. Hope you enjoy my little visits to whatever universe my drawings exist in, and I hope to continue having fun being a part of this blog and enjoying the great work posted here by everyone.

I used the first attempt I doodled on this one, just to keep it loose and quick.

This is a mini version of me, trying to be She- Ra! My grandmother always had the best things to play with.

This little spaz has enough fun just rollin' along in a cardboard box. Something that entertained me for hours I confess. I'd usually imagine it was a tank and I'd bring along a stuffed animal or two and let them tumble about until they abandoned ship. Turning a cardboard box around is near impossible so I never went back for them...

"Magic Stick"

A stick can be anything to a child, and this child is ready to lead his knights to victory.

I drew the above at the tail end of lunch yesterday.

Intro to Me: I'm a programmer by trade, but I enjoyed drawing when I was younger. I was self-taught, never followed the "draw circles and boxes" rules in those learn-how-to-draw books, and created stories and the illustrations to go with them. I used to draw the people in my grade school, and it was amazing how well they turned out. The drawings, not the people. I don't know how the people turned out.

I took drawing and painting in high school. I never could get the hang of charcoal. I still have some of my drawings somewhere in my parents' basement.

Fast forward, I graduated with a BS in computer science, taking a few 3D programming courses. So if you need someone to use bezier curves or quaternions to animate your works of art, I can do that, but I'm still learning how to use the Gimp and Blender myself to create things. I was able to follow a Photoshop tutorial in the Gimp to create a cool space scene, though. Yes, there were lens flares, but I'm not ashamed. I didn't know better.

I'm out of practice, and it shows. I joined the club because I want to get back into drawing again. You don't know how many times I wanted to hit CTRL-Z with my pencil.

"KIDS AT PLAY"
This week I pictured the image of something real, followed up by the image of the creative world going on in the mind of the child. My idea went through some painful phases - and here is the result. I wanted each image to be equally as fun, because playing with the stuff that isn't what you see in your head can be just as compelling as the imaginary creation.

I'M NOT THAT GREAT AT drawing real young kids, and somehow they always end up looking older.

Anyways, I'm not really sure what's going on here. There's a Cardboard Box Race going on, but how these kids are moving them around is beyond me; the wheels are Sharpied on. Regardless, this kid's about to bite it, and the guy in the background just did. Not much in the way of ideas this week. Here's to next week. Until then, enjoy!

Here are my submissions for "Kids at Play."

I used to have this amazing bunk-bed as a kid and it became one of my all-time favorite play things. I decided to show some of the things I remember doing on it. I'm off model in every instance!

When I was home two weeks ago, my five year-old cousin did this (quote and all) in my Grandma's dining room and I couldn't stop laughing. I had to sketch it up and submit it.

Ok so this is a work in progress but I jammed my hand playing basketball, so drawing kills right now. So heres what I got so far, 2 kids jumping on a trampoline (spelling error there I think) anyway here it is.

I've got no interesting backstory on this one; it's just the first idea that popped into my head when reading the topic. I'd love to paint this up at some point, but it's going to have to go into the backlog behind the pirate.

JAWS can do anything!!

When I was young and played around in the bathtub I was always afraid that when I pulled the plug Jaws would come up and eat me. I didn't know much about anything at that age and thought it totally plausible that a 20 ft shark would have no problem navigating the plumbing and rise out of my drain to just to eat me. Eh kids, what can ya do.

Week 3

Kids At Play
Outsider Art Club, session 103

Alright, it looks like the postings for Week 2 are in full steam: thanks to everybody who posted this week. We've had a bunch more people join the club after seeing the turnout from the Zombies vs Pirates session, so next week should be even more packed with posts.

This week's theme comes from the "miraculous" Jeff Williams, and it's "Kids at Play". He describes it as this:

In keeping with the themes of kids and imagination, depict kids at play. The ability of a child to transform his/her surroundings into a completely different world is a very powerful thing. Show the wild imagination of kids at play or show how the simplest thing can become so much fun.

So there you go, off to another session! Next week's theme will be brought to you by the formidable Marshall Bock.
