week 08: TV Dinner

I really tried to give this picture a nice and clean 50's look, and I am quite pleased by the 'overall' look.
If this invention were ever in existense... it would have been like NERF guns, those darn things never got old!!! ***And never get cheaper either....***

I wanted to make those pink/purple dots in the background like bubble gumb, meaning "the bubble gumb era" but that didn't turn out that well.

I tried to give the baseball bat a nice red white & blue look, making it all American, totally fitting the 50's era.

And I also tried to add some people in the background, but nothing really looked right except for good old gumb. ***wish it were still .25 cents***

Food for Thought

Yes, 1950's America was wonderful--if you happen to have been a straight, white, middle-class male. I call this one, "Maximum Security Prism"...

TV Dinner

I knew I was gonna have a tough time deciding which way to go with this topic so I committed to an idea early on and this is the result. Fun stuff! I posted some development ideas/drawings on my blog if anyone is interested. It's pretty interesting how your subconscience works - I knew I wanted limited colors, I knew I wanted a 50's-ish horror theme, I new there would be type - though I didn't think this would end up so Ragnar like. He is a big inspiration for me though.

And nowadays I can't tell if it's my personal taste in colors, or if work is influencing me. I like hot colors and neon bright stuff - stuff that's near impossible to get right in print. In fact, the red is blown out here due to Blogger's compression. But was this a selective decision, or is 255 red becoming the standard for me because I see it everyday? Whatever the case, gotta be careful - it's powerful stuff...

Painty Paints

This is my acrylic on canvas approach to the t.v. dinner. I jumped at creating this entry beacuse I love drawing food so much! It's really hard to make salsbury steak even remotely appetizing though.
SHAMELESS PLUG:
Speaking of food, I'm going to be in an art festival Oct.7th, at the Rockwell St. Art Crossing in Chicago. Food is the theme represented in painting and jewelry form. If you would like to stop on by, here is some more information.

Dinner in the 50's by Brad Rose

Another Jem! It'll be hard to top "Hulk Smash", but Brad's effort is a valiant one this week. There's a lot happening in this one - don't let anything slip your eyes!

Zzzzzz...

I'm running late this week. I fell asleep at my computer last night. I remember struggling to draw a line in Flash and then I zonked out. I'll post again soon though. 'Til then, look how EASY it is to contribute! 100% member participation is just around the corner I can feel it.

T.V. DINNER

I wanted to do something completely wholesome this week (trying to make up for the Hulk's actions in the last topic). I wanted to make this piece like a product add. So delicious, how can you resist? Everyone is happy.

If that is too lame for you, pretend that the ghosts of a 50's family haunt an innocent television set after he moves into their home.

TV Dinner

Hi everyone! This is my first post here. Comments welcome!

Cube Steak Burgundy

If you do a google image search on "tv dinner", you'll find an image of an old Swanson package. I used that as reference for their package design.

As always, no photographs were harmed in the making of this travesty.

James Dean is gay?

I thought of James Dean when I though of the 50's. Im not particularly proud of this one, I think it came out a bit more modern gay man, then old school James Dean. Which is funny, because some people think he may have been gay. The picture below is the one I referenced it from.

Week 08

TV Dinner
Outsider Art Club, session 108

Dave Pryor is bringing the theme this week:

TV Dinner

For this week, I want the theme to be “TV Dinner”. Think back to that time in the fifties, when everything was hopeful and a bright future was ahead for everyone. Families were “Leave It to Beaver” perfect, and streamlined idealism was the new staple for the American household. As always, keep it fun – and be creative. Try a fifties style art approach if you like ( I almost insist on it!)

I really look forward to everyone's contribution!!!

Next week will be an extra-special one, with the one-and-only master of Stick Figure Theater, Bradley Rose, bringing the theme.

Get to drawing!
