i was out earlier tonight,
i didnt really want to be at home, to be honest i really dont want to be anywhere right now...

on saturday this woman comes into work and i swear my breath catches in my throat.

and for a moment i thought it was her, i had to check the tattoos to make sure it wasnt.

if she had a sister this woman would have been her.

and last night...

this is what i wrote earlier tonight when i was trying to draw:

this place is making me feel old tonight. it would be one thing id those years spent had yielded anything as far as my present is concerned. but as it stands, i had those years, i had everything that i ever wanted, i had her. really thats all i ever wanted, to be with her, and now shes gone, and that future with her and i have nothing.

nothing but unwanted memories of being happier that i have been since.

and then again i might be idealizing my past, old people tend to do that.

and i so wish that i was done with this, with her, these feelings that i cant seem to get over. oh i think i have, i think that ive moved on but something always seems to come up to remind me of her and the dreams begin again.

she wasnt always that nice, or compassionate, or really even all that beautiful, at least not in the classical sense,but for whatever reason i think that she was the one that i was meant to be with.

in retrospect i have never carried around feelings for someone as long as i have for her.

so the dreams, when i dream of her, i guess that they are more nightmares than anything else, i wake up sweating and on the verge of tears, half-remembered images of what happened.

and knowing that i had had her and then lost her all over again.

and its been so long now that i know the woman im hung up on, that i cant seem to let go of doesnt even exist anymore, that she has chanced and become a different person than i remember.

that and i can barely remember her face anymore.

the only thing that i can remember are smell of her hair, the taste of her lips and the blues of her eyes.

i know its not lasting but they feel special when i remember their name or drink or both.

for some reason i dont do so well with prompts that are colors. at least at first, this one is the idea i finally came up with after much much thought.

when i was in preschool i loved kermit the frog, and from what ive been told, the color green. so much so that when i was at school i would take all the green paint and not let anyone else use it.

kinda like picasso's blue period, only green and fingerpaints... and being like four.

this was a post i had made a few months ago, but if the prompt fits...

the other day i got a rare treat.

this woman came in with a screaming, snot dripping, whiny child in tow.

the treat?

at one point, years and years, pounds and pounds, and before that cute freckle turned into a nasty, hairy mole, i had dated her.

and she had cheated on me, and eventually left.

and i realized in that moment that i had dodged a massive bullet.

the only downside was that i had to take her order.

this one started about a week or so into working there, women come in and pay for their orders and hand me money or cards with bits of paper or post its attached.

and on these bits of paper are phone numbers and then from the customer... a wink.

and there is no easy out on this one, you cant really pretend you didnt notice, and there is no way in hell youre going to follow up.

so i smile lamely and say, thank you, your drink will be up in a few minutes

This blog is lousy with tumbleweeds, I tell ya! In an effort to keep this thing moving--at least for a little while--I've decided to tackle some previous topics for which I had not submitted a drawing. These pieces represent "Pimp My Ride" and "Draw Your Favorite Sports Mascot", respectively. You can probably tell which one I enjoyed more (Hint: it ain't the unicycle!), and I consider that picture an utter failure in almost every regard. Why submit it, or even finish it, you may ask? I believe that we should learn from our creative mistakes, and also make them as public as possible so that the shame can propel us forward to more successful endeavors. Anyway, I hope you enjoy these, even if that enjoyment manifests as derisive laughter. More to come...

This is my first pass at sketching for this topic. (I won't have time to work on it anymore for a while.) Actually, Catherine reminded me of this experience. We also drove everywhere on vacations- no fancy airplanes for us! So, we'd stay in a lot of hotels- some a bit more interesting than others. One time we stayed in a very small hotel run by ex-clowns. I took the liberty exaggerating a bit in this sketch!

I really tried to give this picture a nice and clean 50's look, and I am quite pleased by the 'overall' look.
If this invention were ever in existense... it would have been like NERF guns, those darn things never got old!!! ***And never get cheaper either....***

I wanted to make those pink/purple dots in the background like bubble gumb, meaning "the bubble gumb era" but that didn't turn out that well.

I tried to give the baseball bat a nice red white & blue look, making it all American, totally fitting the 50's era.

And I also tried to add some people in the background, but nothing really looked right except for good old gumb. ***wish it were still .25 cents***

I was watching an old Bruce Lee movie recently, and I was marveling at speed and grace of a guy whose movies I hadn't watched since I was a little, little boy. I started getting super-excited while watching it, wondering who the heck the final boss was gonna be for Bruce Lee to figth. These movies are totally like playing an old-school video game, like fighting through Double Dragon or Streets of rage for the first time, just wondering what you'd get to fight against next. So who does master of fighting Bruce Lee get paired up against as the ultimate test of his fighting spirit?

This idea is from a few weeks back. I didn't really design a set of playing cards, but the topic did generate this idea of a "Royal" family. I sketched up this forelorn King, and I originally had this nagging Queen next to him. I just didn't like the composition, so I changed the Queen to a spoiled Prince riding a horse. I wonder if it was coincidence that this card topic was for Week 21.

I meant for this one to be real quick. For the most part it was, but man, I could go for days tryin' to pick out colors. Sometimes, a limited palette is the toughtest to deal with.

I ain't too crazy 'bout the design of caveman frozen in the ice. Some weird choices I made lookin' back on it. The shape of the body, some of the incomplete lines in the head, how the head connects to the body. The strange thing was, I remember thinking that I should push his expression more while I was drawing him but then thinking, "I just want to get this done". Like I was rushing my homework just so I could get to that new video game. Pages 31-33 odds from my math book before I could get to my brand new $60 Super Street Fighter 2 on the SNES. Agony.

I scanned every development doodle for this image and put 'em up on my blog if anyone cares to take a peek.

Week 22: 8 Legs to VICTORY!

In 1958, when a team in the NHL had to win 2, best-of-7 series to take home the Stanley Cup a couple guys had the bright idea to throw a dead octopus on the ice at the first game of the first serires. The guys were staunch Detroit Red Wings fans. The eight legs of the octopus symbolized the eight games that Detroit would have to win to own the Stanley Cup for the first time. Low and behold Detroit swept both series that year, winning eight games straight. Ever since, the "unofficial" mascot of the team has been the Dead Octopus.

I've drawn the unfortunate Thought-It-Was-Dead-But-Was-Only-Unconscious Octopus during his fall to the ice (where he would most likely be smacked about with a hocky stick and then flipped into the trash). Just a sketch here, but I'm so far behind I needed to get something posted before I loose the very little steam I've been able to build up so far. I may finish it off in the next few days, but I seriously need to pimp my ride and then get back to fighting fires some 40 million years ago (seriously, I'm such a dork).

Don't let any detail slip your eyes here. Another masterwork from Hall of Famer Brad Rose. I actually like the composition of angles in the stadium. Oddly uneven but balanced well.

Fun Fact: The letter-wearing fans at the bottom are Brad, Dave Polus and me, Bob. We are oversized and excited to be at the game.

Not as original as I coulda gone with the mascot topic, but I'm totally stoked about the SUPERBOWL! Can you stand it!?

I'm a little let down by my color choices here though. I love orange, so that's not the problem - but maybe the bear coulda been more red or brown or something and the green grass and blue sky are pretty standard blah. I tried a lot of weird things and hot colors but I kept coming back to the colors of football in my mind.

Early on I intended on having the bear plowing through actual horses (colts) in jerseys. All my horses were very flat and posing them was a pain - those back legs always give me trouble. It was just easier to doodle up a buncha flailing bodies.

Some horrible, horrible, God awful warm up doodles up on my blog again.

In closing:

California Grizzly (Pups)

So, our mascot in high school was the grizzly bear. As a freshman, I thought it evoked a sense of fear in our rivals. By the time I was a senior, this is how I pictured him. Lazy and clueless. I think he was tagged, tracked, broke into a rich San Ramon soccer mom's car who became irrate that her leather seats were damage so she had it shot and rolled off a cliff somewhere in the redwoods. Yup, that's about what my four years there felt like.

First time posting here, even though I joined about three weeks ago. Did this pretty quickly, after I figured out the pose. But figuring out the pose took about 35 sketches to get even close to something I liked (still not entirely happy with it).

Maybe I'll be less lazy (or busy) and have a more finished piece on the next post - cleaner inks or maybe even color! Heck, I'm just happy with myself that I posted something.

I love the Oakland A's!! Their mascot is "Stomper" the elephant who goes back to like 1930 I think, when the A's were in Philadelphia. Anyways the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (whata name) are the A's ARCH NEMISIS!! The Angels mascot is the "Rally Monkey." Die Monkey Die.....

Still wanted to get in on this topic from a few weeks ago. My first version of this was absolutely horrifying, so I tried making the imaginary creature more fun.

Blogger 2.0 switchover

Hey outsiders, we've officially made the switch over to 2.0. One of the nice things about it is that you can add labels to a post that allows you to filter according to those labels. I went back through all 291 posts to date and labeled them by week; now you can actually see each week's entries without having to sift through the noise of previous weeks.

The only drawback to Blogger 2.0 is that you have to switch over to a Google account. The process is painless, if not a bit annoying.

Tomorrow will see a new theme, so keep your eyes peeled and your pencils sharpened!

Paging Miss Page

I didn't have much of an idea for how I wanted to treat this image. Clean in Flash? Roughed up a bit? Monochromatic? etc. I ended up liking the rough pencils but I started re-drawing her in Flash real clean like. I wasted my time there because I layed the pencils over top anyway so there was no need for perfect lines/shapes.

One thing I wanted to achieve from the beginning was to do the whole figure. I always seem to concentrate on the upper body of a character or I just run out of room for the legs. And because of that I feel my proportions are a bit weak. Just trying to make an effort to correct that I guess.

I'll post some horrible early pose ideas on my blog later today.

Apologies for the lateness of my assignment. Things have been busy. Actually, this is the second piece I've completed this week; the other can be viewed on my blog, (Wr)etchings--shameless plugs ROCK! As for "Snakes on a Page", I came across a fabulous bondage photo of America's sweetheart on the same day that "Snakes on a Plane" came out on DVD; you can't deny that kind of synergy. I re-worked the image in a way that is sure to arouse someone out there; if that person is you, please don't contact me...

I didn't really know who Bettie Page was. I knew she was a burlesque dancer and into stripe tease. I thought it would be a challenge so I tried drawing her and after researching pictures, this is what I came up with.

Since this week is loaded with holidays and the craziness that can come with them, we're going to extend the most reent topic into next week. Next Saturday we'll have Sam Aquino's theme to start us off into the new year!

I'll also be playing around with switching us over to the new blogger since everytime I sign in, they're telling us we should. I'll report back soon with any of the changes or improvements to the system.

Duck-Billed Batypus

At dusk, on the surface of our local lakes you can spot the indigenous duck-billed batypus trying to get a meal. Known for their perfected sonar, their only flaw is the sonar affecting "quacking" that tends to cause these small aviarodents to occasionally land in the water and attempt to swim.

If I Only Had...

This topic came up when I was in Belgium, and the first thing that came to mind was to have the power to shoot lasers out of my eyes. So here it is - I'm towering over Brussels Grand Place shooting lasers. It's all OK though, the lasers heal sick children, and destroy everything else.

I wasn't going to post anything this week, but after the animation screening at Columbia College last night, I felt like drawing the whole train ride home. I put some color into it today and here it is! Little Bo Peep has found herself in a horror movie somehow. Poor sheep!!!
